Throughout this entire website, the
importance of asking questions prior to staying at a
B&B has been strongly emphasized. This is not
because there are risks in staying at a B&B (they're
very safe) but because an innkeeper will not know your
preferences or how s/he can please you and make your
stay memorable until you communicate important
information to him or her.
Nonetheless, there can be problems. The
term "problems" is not to mean that after a stay at a
certain B&B you may feel you wouldn't return, but
more like issues such as deceptive advertising, personal
safety issues, etc. Not liking the décor or not be
"quite" what you expected, essentially demanding
perfection would not necessarily constitute a problem
but more an issue of varying perception.
Innkeepers are aware that they project
the aspects of their property, via photographs and
language, to people who have never seen it before and
who only have to imagine what it's like until they
arrive. We all know that impressions of pictures and
written material vary greatly among people. Those
differences usually don't impede a guest from having a
successful stay.
However, an issue will almost always
become a problem when the innkeeper does not appear
sincere in listening to the complaint and if possible,
making some sort of effort to do something about it.
Most innkeepers definitely want to please guests and in
99.99% of cases, the lodging experience is good or
better.
Whatever the issue, if you, the guest,
feel it's serious, then bring it up to the operator.
That way, the path to some sort of resolution is
undertaken and both parties can work towards some
alternate solution.
If the issue is so serious and after
notifying the innkeeper you are convinced that s/he is
simply not willing to engage in good-faith resolution,
then it may be necessary to consult a third party.
